FAQ
  • How should I prepare for my notary appointment?
To ensure a smooth notary appointment, please follow these steps: Make sure your documents are fully filled out and complete—there should be no blank spaces. Do not sign or date the document before your appointment. You must sign in front of the notary. If you have questions about the document, please consult the entity requesting it or seek advice from legal counsel. Notaries cannot provide guidance on how to complete documents or explain their legal implications.
  • How long does the average notarization appointment take?
Most notarizations are completed within 15-30 minutes. However, more complex documents or multiple signers may take a bit longer.
  • What are the acceptable forms of identification for notarization?
The following are acceptable forms of identification for notarization: A non-expired government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license, passport, or U.S. military ID. Any other non-expired government ID (from the U.S. or another country) that includes a photo or signature. A foreign passport A verification on oath or affirmation from a credible witness who personally appears before the notary and is either known to the notary or identifiable by a valid government ID, such as a passport, driver’s license, or non-driver identification card. If an individual is physically unable to sign, they may direct another person (other than the notary) to sign on their behalf. In this case, the notary must record in the journal: "Signature affixed by [name of signer] at the direction of [name of individual]." The person signing must also sign the journal as it appears on the document. (§ 1–1231.08)
